In an effort to improve public communication and foster a more objective approach to migration issues, the International Organization for Migration (IOM)<\/strong><\/a>, in cooperation with the Europe House in Novi Sad, organized a two-day training programme for national experts in the field, local institutional stakeholders, and journalists.<\/p>\n

The main objective of the training was to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders at all levels and encourage balanced discussions on migration.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAll aspects of migration are important\u2014from security considerations and development opportunities to an issue that is often overlooked: the protection of the human rights of people on the move. We want to better understand what the Republic of Serbia can gain from migration, how migration can contribute to the development of local communities, and how to make the best use of the potential of people with migration experience\u201d<\/em>, explained migration expert Miroslava Jela\u010di\u0107.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Among the participants was Tanja Barbulov<\/strong>, Commissioner for Refugees and Migration for the City of Kikinda.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe covered topics such as labour migration and security, and I believe that this type of training should be held regularly so that we can keep pace with new legislation and public policy documents\u201d<\/em>, said Barbulov.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Joint efforts by institutions and experts are key to building a society that recognizes the potential of migration while involving the media as an essential resource. Alongside Miroslava Jela\u010di\u0107, Verica Re\u010devi\u0107<\/strong>, an IOM consultant on the project, contributed to the development of tools that support this approach.<\/p>\n

The two experts are also the authors of the handbook Narrative on Migration<\/em>, which was distributed to all training participants.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe power of words is crucial in shaping public attitudes. Migration is becoming an increasingly complex phenomenon and is often manipulated for various purposes. This handbook offers authentic scenarios and a glossary that help journalists and students frame migration narratives in the public interest. Our goal is to remind people of the power of information\u2014it can reduce risks and fears and guide us towards protecting human rights and human dignity\u201d<\/em>, Re\u010devi\u0107 emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Anja Mati\u0107<\/strong>, a young journalist with Radio Television of Vojvodina, said that the training has given her greater confidence in her newsroom work, particularly when reporting on migration-related topics.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cUntil now, I had not had the opportunity to explore migration issues in depth, but after learning more about responsible reporting, I no longer feel intimidated by such assignments. I now know how to approach the topic properly, without sensationalism, and I will be able to help my colleagues produce higher-quality reports\u201d<\/em>, said Mati\u0107, adding that the availability of the handbook, especially in digital format, is essential for educating younger generations of journalists.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The training sessions were organized as part of the project European Union Support to Migration Management in Serbia: Promoting the Integration of Refugees and Migrants<\/em>, funded by the European Union and jointly implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia (KIRS).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
