Exhibition opens and a new regional cycle, “Truth or Myth?”, is launched<\/h3>\n

What happens when science calls into question something that seems obvious? That question changed the way we saw the world almost five centuries ago, and on September 22, at the Science Club Leskovac, it became the starting point for a conversation about science, evidence and the myths that still follow us today. That same day saw the opening of the exhibition “Nicolaus Copernicus: A Pilgrimage to the Stars” and the launch of a new regional science outreach cycle, “Truth or Myth?”, organized by Europe House Ni\u0161.<\/p>\n

What could visitors see at the exhibition in Leskovac?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The exhibition, prepared by the Copernicus Academy and presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Belgrade<\/a>, was opened in Leskovac by Andrzej Kalinowski, Consul of the Republic of Poland in Serbia. Through 11 roll-up banners, it presents the life and work of one of the most important Polish and European scientists, and will remain open to the public for the next ten days. Consul Kalinowski spoke about Copernicus’s remarkable versatility: he was not only an astronomer, but also worked in law, medicine, economics and cartography, and his name is now carried by schools, institutions and streets around the world.<\/p>\n

Did Copernicus really just “stop the Sun and set the Earth in motion”?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This story of the man behind the great discovery served as a fitting introduction to the lecture by Dr. Milan Milo\u0161evi\u0107<\/strong>, assistant professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics, University of Ni\u0161, titled “Truth or Myth? Copernicus and the Great Misconception About the Universe,” which took the audience back to the time of the Copernican Revolution.<\/p>\n

One of the most widespread myths, Milo\u0161evi\u0107 explained, is that Copernicus simply “stopped the Sun and set the Earth in motion.” His model was far more complex, built on existing knowledge and mathematics, and developed in dialogue with the work of earlier scholars. That is why the story of Copernicus is not just a story about a single discovery, but also about how science actually works: through questions, observation, evidence, and a willingness to revisit explanations once they no longer hold up.<\/p>\n

“The science of that time wasn’t the product of lone geniuses,” said Milo\u0161evi\u0107, pointing to the importance of collaboration among scientists then and now, when European programmes such as Horizon Europe<\/a> and COST<\/a> allow researchers to connect and exchange knowledge. He added that scientific findings do not remain meaningful if they fail to reach the public, since the popularization of science connects researchers and citizens and opens up space for questions and curiosity.<\/p>\n

What does Copernicus have to do with tracking today’s climate?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The name of Copernicus is also carried by Copernicus<\/a>, the European Union’s Earth observation programme, which uses satellite data to help us better understand changes on our planet, from climate change and air quality to floods and wildfires. In this way, the question Copernicus once raised about humanity’s place in the universe finds its modern continuation: what is happening on Earth today, and how can science help us understand it?<\/p>\n

What comes next in the “Truth or Myth?” cycle<\/strong><\/p>\n

The event in Leskovac is part of the European Researchers’ Night<\/a> programme, which brings science closer to the public across Europe and Serbia. The cycle continues in cooperation with the Science Clubs in Ni\u0161, Pirot, Zaje\u010dar and Knja\u017eevac, carrying a simple message: science is not a set of finished facts, but a process in which questions and explanations are constantly tested, and the public is invited to take part in that testing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
