Books in the Spotlight: Dubravka Stojanović

Wednesday, 11 June at 19:00
The June series opens with a conversation featuring Dubravkom Stojanović, a prominent historian and professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. The evening will explore the role of history in shaping contemporary society: do schoolbooks foster myths, how are national delusions formed, and is Serbia in a state of constant resistance to modernity? Known for her engaged approach and critical reflection on collective memory, Stojanović will also discuss how history is both used – and misused – in the public sphere today. She is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Konrad Adenauer Foundation prize for her contribution to reconciliation in the region and promotion of European values.

Books in the Spotlight: Petar Janjatović

Wednesday, 18 June at 19:00
The second evening features Petar Janjatović, one of the leading chroniclers of the domestic music scene and author of the cult "YU Rock Encyclopedia". The discussion will delve into how rock music took shape in Yugoslavia, how it survived the 1990s, and which books best document its complex and turbulent evolution. Janjatović will share personal stories from the music scene, reflect on the role of alternative culture, and speak about the importance of recording musical heritage in an age of digital transience. Over the course of his decades-long career, he has worked as a journalist, editor, and music curator across radio, television, and print, leaving a lasting mark on the cultural landscape.

Books in the Spotlight: Srđan Dragojević
Wednesday, 25 June at 19:00
The June edition concludes with a conversation with Srđan Dragojević, a film director whose works have influenced generations. The occasion is the release of his new book of screenplays – both produced and unproduced – which offers a glimpse into how film narratives are crafted, and why some never reached the screen. The discussion will cover the screenplay as an independent literary form, censorship, production, and the personal challenges of making art in turbulent times. Dragojević is the director of award-winning films such as Pretty Village, Pretty Flame, Parade, and We Are Not Angels, and is among the rare local filmmakers whose works are both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

The impressive line-up of guests clearly shows that the conversation will go beyond literature – touching on everything that shapes our culture, from rock ‘n’ roll to film, from books to societal issues.

How do books help us understand history?

Which works have shaped the Serbian cultural scene?
