European Mobility Week 2026 Begins: Mobility for All

From September 16 to 22, Serbia will join cities across Europe in marking European Mobility Week 2026, under the title “Mobility for All”. The campaign places citizens’ perspectives at the centre of smart urban mobility planning, promoting safe, accessible and sustainable transport for everyone, regardless of age, ability or life circumstances. It also highlights how much the design and organization of streets, public spaces and transport systems directly affect quality of life in our cities and communities.

“Safe, accessible and inclusive zero-emission mobility is not a luxury, it is essential for people’s quality of life and for sustainable economic development. Communities must take the lead in shaping transport solutions that meet the real needs of citizens, and the European Union is proud to support these efforts, not only by advocating for this vision, but also by investing in concrete projects that improve everyday life. Better connectivity, safer mobility and modern transport infrastructure built to European standards allow people to travel safely, comfortably and independently, regardless of age or ability, while at the same time connecting communities, regions and economies,” said the Ambassador of the European Union to Serbia, Andreas von Beckerath.

European Mobility Week, launched by the European Commission in 2002, has grown into one of the world’s largest initiatives for promoting sustainable urban mobility. Last year, more than 2,700 cities in 45 countries took part in the campaign. This year’s campaign also places additional emphasis on intergenerational equality, connecting generations through simple and universal ways of getting around: cycling and walking.

Mobility Week gives us an important opportunity to place citizens at the centre of the discussion, to talk with them, to listen to their experiences and needs, and to bring new ideas and perspectives into the conversation on smart mobility. It is a chance to think not only about how we get around today, but also about how we want to get around in the future, and how better mobility can bring concrete benefits to people, communities and society as a whole.

Events will be held in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, Novi Pazar, Aranđelovac and Subotica, with each local programme tailored to the needs and specific circumstances of the local community. Across Serbia, the programme will bring together educational and awareness-raising activities, road safety initiatives, activities related to cycling and walking, mapping of sustainable routes, and activities promoting active and inclusive mobility.

The start of this year’s campaign in Serbia will be marked by a series of joint bicycle rides with Olympic cyclist Ivan Stević, bringing together representatives of institutions and partners. The rides will lead to primary schools and city squares, where interactive programmes will connect participants of different generations. Through cycling and walking, the initiative will highlight this year’s central campaign message.

In Belgrade, the programme will bring together a joint bicycle ride and an educational session at a primary school, focused on road safety, safe routes, intergenerational equality and active and inclusive mobility, along with a mini course for developing cycling skills run by Tour de Fun.

In Niš, the programme will link cycling, road safety and school activities, alongside the “Sport for All” event in Čair Park, which will bring together citizens, local sports clubs and sports enthusiasts. Novi Pazar will bring together cycling and walking activities, route mapping, a photo exhibition dedicated to mobility, a cycling skills course and road safety training run by Tour de Fun, as well as a recreational bicycle ride through the city.

The wider campaign will also include activities in Niš: a mountain trail on Mount Kalafat, connected to the European long-distance path E7, will be cleaned, marked and put into use through a demonstration training race. In Subotica, European Mobility Week will be linked to the marking of 25 years of German development cooperation in Serbia, with bicycle tours showcasing the Resilient Cities in Serbia project and selected Climate Points. In Aranđelovac, a Car-Free Day will turn part of Kneza Miloša Street into a public space for pedestrians, cyclists, children, older people and persons with disabilities, featuring a children’s zone for road safety and cycling skills development, a recreational bicycle ride, an interactive zone for citizens, and a “City Safari,” a walk dedicated to accessibility.

This year’s campaign carries a central message: sustainable mobility must be designed for everyone, regardless of physical ability. Mr Milan Petrović, a Serbian Paralympic cyclist, will join the programme as an advocate for accessibility and inclusion.

European Mobility Week 2026 is organized by the EU Delegation to Serbia, in partnership with the EU for Green Agenda in Serbia project, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Transport Community. The campaign also brings together cities and municipalities, schools, embassies of EU member states, EU-funded projects, programmes, civil society organizations and other partners across the country.
